![]() Fully Licensed & Insured PROTECTING YOUR VALUABLES Loss and Damage Liability (Valuation)
The household goods moving industry generally provides two programs for determining carrier liability, both of
which consider depreciation in calculating claims settlements. In addition, most major van lines like
Meyer's/Mayflower offer full-value protection programs which do not incorporate depreciation as a factor in
determining replacement value. The program which you select will determine Meyer's/Mayflower's
maximum liability to you for your shipment. However, please remember that valuation is not insurance. Valuation
is a tariff-based level of motor carrier liability. If you desire the kinds of additional protection afforded by insurance
coverage, you should contact your insurance company.
FULL REPLACEMENT VALUE - MEYER'S/MAYFLOWER'S "GREEN LIGHT
GUARANTEE"
Plan B. Full Replacement Value with a $300 deductible. Under this option, a $300 deductible will apply on
damage claims. You are still protected from the first dollar of loss due to documented missing items. Because you
share in the potential liability of any claim, the cost for Plan B, full Replacement Value with a $300 deductible is
available to you at a lower cost. Your Mayflower agent can provide you with the cost for this valuation option.
Except for application of the $300 deductible on damage claims, you will have the same protection under Plan B
as you have under Plan A. DECLARED VALUE PROTECTION
CARRIER'S LIABILITY
Under this option, for example, Meyer's/Mayflower's maximum liability for an item lost or damaged
weighing 70 pounds would be $42.00 (70 pounds x 60 cents = $42.00). Depreciation is also considered by
Meyer's/Mayflower when determining a settlement amount. This option is very basic and is used most
frequently when other insurance which may respond to a loss is available – for example,
homeowner's insurance applicable to a move – or by corporations that have blanket coverage for
their employees.
At the time your shipment is delivered, it is your responsibility to check each item that is delivered against those
items listed on your inventory. Check each item for damage that did not exist when the shipment was loaded. If
there is additional damage, make a record of that damage on the delivery inventory. Mayflower will only consider a
claim for a missing item as "documented" when a record is made by you on the delivery inventory that an item has
not been delivered.
The driver who handles your shipment is instructed to allow you sufficient time during delivery to inspect your
goods and to record any exceptions on the delivery inventory. If, for any reason, you are not given opportunity to
inspect your goods and make exceptions, contact Meyer's/Mayflower's Customer Service
Department during delivery. ITEMS OF EXTRAORDINARY VALUE
Because Meyer's/Mayflower's liability for your shipment is limited to the written declaration of value
which you place on the Bill of Lading, you should include the value of all items, including all items of extraordinary
value, in the total amount of released value which you declare for your goods. Please note that protection for items
of extraordinary value is not available for shipments which are released to Meyer's/Mayflower at a value of
60 cents per pound per article (Carrier's Liability option). NON-ALLOWABLES
Hazardous Materials – items that are flammable, corrosive or explosive.
Examples include:
*For shipments moving less than 150 miles and delivered shortly of pickup, carriers may
agree to transport perishables that are properly packed and require no servicing in transit.
Note: You should empty your refrigerators and freezers and keep appliance doors open for at least
24 hours in advance of loading. This will allow the appliance to dry out and prevent the growth of
mold.
Items of Personal Importance/Sentimental Value – this third category of "non-allowables," while not
representing a physical threat, can create problems, should your shipment be delayed or items lost. The impact of
a loss or delay can be lessened if irreplaceable, sentimental items are carried with you and not packed with your
shipment.
